Amid high drama and chaos that lasted for about an hour, five sisters who had been members of Sri Aurobindo Ashram and staying in Ambabhikshu apartments in Kuruchikuppam were evicted by the police on Wednesday as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

The apex court on December 9 directed Jayashreee Prasad and her sisters Arunashri Prasad, Rajyashree Prasad, Nivedita Prasad and Hemalata Prasad – to vacate the premises within seven days, and if they failed to vacate, the jurisdictional police station — All Mahila police station, Puducherry, should evict them from the premises, Ambabhikshu House.

The five sisters had given a joint letter addressed to the Trustees of Sri Aurobindo Ashram on December 15 demanding that they direct the police to stop the execution of the Supreme Court order.

A police team had moved in by 9 a.m. to execute the apex court order.

Soon, heated arguments broke out between the members of police team led by Superintendent of Police (North) N. Ravikumar and the sisters who kept maintaining that they had no justice, security or safety.

The police took the stand that they cannot ignore the direction of the apex court to evict them if they failed to vacate the premises.

High drama ensued when one of the sisters, Hemalata Prasad climbed up an overhead water tank on the multi-storey building and threatened to jump from the building if the police launched action to evict them.

Initially, the police were hesitant to go up, but later they brought Hemalata down with the help of women police personnel.

“We will not budge from this place and even if the police drop us on the streets we would proceed to the Bay of Bengal and end our lives. We have no other option as we are left with no source of income,” Hemalata Prasad said.

A team including women police personnel took all the sisters under tight security to the All women police station and pacified them.
