An Appeal to all GCF members, SAS, Auroville

September 3, 2013

On 31st August ’13, ‘Raghavan’ posted the following appeal as a comment which we believe deserves to be given greater prominence:

=========================================================================================================

To All GCF Members,

Further to the appointment of retired high court judge to conduct an enquiry on ashram, the time has come to all members of Golden Chain Fraternity to rise to the occasion and offer your service in whatever individual capacity you have to the Ashram Trust…All of you have studied in Her School and this is the expected from all of you to punish all those who have indulged in mudslinging, tarnishing the Ashram reputation and expel those who have been spokesperson of falsehood.

It is the Hour of GOD and we all need to rise to the occasion to do our bit individually and must write to the enquiry officer and get registered any evidences for Ashram’s well-being . This is especially addressed to the women students who have benefited so much over the years. It would be woe unto us if we don’t do our best now.

Also appeal to Pradeep Narang and Vijay Bhai to mobilise the Sri Aurobindo Society and its branches and get resolution passed on every branch of the society against the false allegations against women and other false charges against trustees. After all Sri Aurobindo Society is the propaganda wing of the Ashram.

Also request the working committee of Auroville, after calling for a general assembly meeting, denying the allegations and stating that they have the full trust in Ashram Trust and that all is well.

Lastly requesting all devotees, admirers and well wishers of The Ashram to wake up and write to the enquiry officer that all allegations made are evil and false and categorical state that the have full trust in the Ashram Trust.

  1. “After all Sri Aurobindo Society is the propaganda wing of the Ashram.”

I will surely write to the inquiry officer following your call but the above sentence is unacceptable. It is unbecoming of Sri Aurobindo’s disciple. Just as the word “Impossible” did not exist in Napoleon’s dictionary, similarly the word “propaganda” does not exist in Sri Aurobindo’s dictionary. Please remove this sentence.

Sri Aurobindo on Propaganda: “I do not care a button about having my name in any blessed place. I was never ardent about fame even in my political days; I preferred to remain behind the curtain, push people without their knowing it and get things done. It was the confounqed British Government that spoiled my game by prosecuting me and forcing me to be publicly known and a “leader”.

Then, again, I don’t believe in advertisement except for books etc., and in propaganda except for politics and patent medicines. But for serious work it is a poison. It means either a stunt or a boom—and stunts and booms exhaust the thing they carry on their crest and leave it lifeless and broken high and dry on the shores of nowhere—or it means a movement.

A movement in the case of a work like mine means the founding of a school or a sect or some other damned nonsense. It means that hundreds or thousands of useless people join in and corrupt the work or reduce it to a pompous farce from which the Truth that was coming down recedes into secrecy and silence. It is what has happened to the “religions” and is the reason of their failure.

If I tolerate a little writing about myself, it is only to have a sufficient counter-weight in that amorphous chaos, the public mind, to balance the hostility that is always aroused by the presence of a new dynamic Truth in this world of ignorance. But the utility ends there and too much advertisement would defeat that object. I am perfectly “rational”, I assure you, in my methods and I do not proceed merely on any personal dislike of fame. If and so far as publicity serves the Truth, I am quite ready to tolerate it; but I do not find publicity for its own sake desirable.”una

dear distant observer, you are right, propaganda and Sri Aurobindo do not go together. but what Raghavan describes is also true. The Sri Aurobindo Society has becomes a propaganda machinery. You can see that the SAS is drifting away from Sri Aurobindo and his philosophy. This can be seen in the way the SAS has also drifted away from the SA Ashram. The SAS is more concerned about itself rather than with Sri Aurobindo or his Ashram. For the SAS it is the SAS first, all else comes second. For example, the SAS announces with great pride that the Mother is the Life-Time President of the SAS. Oh how important it makes the SAS appear!!! The SA Ashram does not need to make such propagandist proclamations. The SA Ashram and Auroville are the legitimate offshoots of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. The SAS is at best a distant step-brother or an adopted one. As long as the SAS wants to be equal to the Ashram or Auroville it shall always suffer of an inferiority complex. For this it shall always try to out-compete the other two. The day that the SAS realizes that its only purpose is to serve the SA Ashram and Auroville it will be in its right place. Until then the SAS will always find itself on the wrong side.

Appalled that while ashram is being attacked verbally and otherwise ,vijay who resides in ashram premises is silent. Vijay along with his friend leads the Sri aurobindo society centres and no effort has been made so far in persuading the attackers to give up the violent method of protests . Why is there an inaction so far. Can he explain ? If he has not done anything tangible, it amounts to either sheer cowardice or he is also an enemy .

    Dear distant observer

what has SAS been doing all along but collecting funds and giving lectures and speeches .This has not been the purpose of Sri Aurobindo’s yoga .The need of the Lords yoga is more on hastening the new Man and if the SAS is concentrated on this it would do work on the right lines and be lead by an inspired leadership .The work of the Society is not to do the work of propaganda or awareness only and should collectively hasten the advent of new species by opening itself to the new light which manifested on Feb 29 , 1956 .If one leader from SAS can hold The Power , then SAS would be inspired to do the right work.I don’t think this is happening in these lines as of now.

  4. Please let me (and others) know the address of the Inquiring Officer to whom the letters in support of the S. A. Trust could be written, following this appeal. Thanks.
